Working remotely doesn’t always mean working from home, right?
Anywhere there’s Wi-Fi, you can work. We’re looking at you, Starbucks.
Unfortunately, although Wi-Fi hotspots in coffee shops, libraries, airports, hotels, universities, and other public places are convenient, they’re not always secure.
So, here are four safety rules for whenever you connect to a public Wi-Fi:
- Check that you’re connecting to a genuine network. It’s easy for criminals to set up fakes that look like the real deal
- Be careful which sites you visit. Don’t enter sensitive information on banking apps, for instance. Anyone could potentially see your details if the network isn’t secured
- ‘Forget’ the network when you’ve finished. Things can change between visits even if you work from the same location regularly. It’s safer not to allow your devices to automatically connect
- Try a VPN (Virtual Private Network). If you’re out regularly, the most secure way of connecting to Wi-Fi is via a VPN. This makes it more difficult for anyone to see the information you send and receive
